Safety
Your Safety. Our Priority.
At BodyReliva, we don't cut corners when it comes to your skin. Every device in our lineup is built to meet the strictest European safety standards — because effective hair removal should never come at the cost of your well-being.
European Regulatory Compliance
Our IPL devices carry the CE marking — the mandatory conformity mark required to legally place products on the market within the European Economic Area (EEA). This marking confirms that our devices meet EU requirements for safety, health, and environmental protection.
At-home IPL devices fall under the EU Medical Devices Regulation (EU) 2017/745, commonly known as the MDR. Specifically, they are classified under Annex XVI, which covers devices with an aesthetic purpose intended for use on the human body — including intense pulsed light equipment. Under this regulation, our devices are required to meet the General Safety and Performance Requirements (GSPR) before being placed on the market.
The applicable international safety standard for home-use IPL is IEC 60335-2-113, which governs beauty care appliances incorporating lasers and intense light sources. This standard covers critical safety features including skin contact detection, intensity limits, UV filtering, and eye safety protection.
In plain English: every BodyReliva device has passed the safety checks required by European law before reaching your doorstep.
Built-In Safety Features
Every device in our range includes multiple layers of protection designed to make your sessions safe and worry-free:
Skin Contact Sensor — The device will only flash when the treatment window is fully pressed against your skin. If contact is incomplete or the device is lifted away, no light is emitted. This prevents accidental flashes and ensures every pulse is delivered safely.
5 Adjustable Intensity Levels — Not all skin is the same, and not all areas of the body have the same sensitivity. Our devices let you start at level 1 and work your way up gradually. Sensitive areas like the bikini line or upper lip can be treated on lower settings, while legs and arms can handle higher intensity.
UV Filter — A built-in UV filter blocks harmful ultraviolet wavelengths, ensuring that only the safe light spectrum (600–1200nm) reaches your skin.
Eye Safety — Every device comes with protective filtering glasses included in the box. While the skin contact sensor already prevents misfires, the glasses provide an additional layer of protection. Never use the device near your eyes.
Frost Cooling System™ (Reliva Frost & Frost Wireless only) — Our exclusive cooling technology keeps the device head at a constant temperature between 0°C and -10°C, instantly soothing the skin with every flash and neutralizing heat on contact. This means zero redness, zero burning sensation, and complete comfort — even on the most sensitive areas.
Who Should Not Use IPL
IPL is safe for the vast majority of users, but there are some important exceptions. Do not use any IPL device if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are under 18 years old
- Have epilepsy or are sensitive to light (photosensitivity)
- Are currently taking photosensitizing medication (some antibiotics, acne treatments, or anti-inflammatories — check with your doctor if unsure)
- Have active skin cancer or lesions in the treatment area
- Have a pacemaker or other active implanted medical device
Do not treat the following areas or conditions:
- Tattoos — IPL targets pigment, and tattoo ink will absorb the light, which can cause burns. Leave at least a 1 cm margin around any tattoo.
- Moles, dark spots, or birthmarks — skip over them during treatment to avoid irritation.
- Broken, irritated, or sunburned skin — wait until the skin has fully healed.
- The eye area — never use the device above the cheekbones.
If you are unsure whether IPL is suitable for your situation, consult a healthcare professional before use — or contact us at info@bodyreliva.com and we'll help you figure it out.
Skin Tone & Hair Color Compatibility
IPL technology relies on the contrast between your skin tone and your hair pigment to work effectively. Here's what you need to know:
Best results: Light to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I–IV) with dark hair (black to light brown). The greater the contrast, the more effective the treatment.
Limited effectiveness: Very light hair (white, grey, light blonde, red) does not contain enough melanin to absorb the light energy. Results will be significantly reduced or absent.
Not recommended: Very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick types V–VI). The device cannot reliably distinguish between skin pigment and hair pigment, which reduces effectiveness and increases the risk of irritation.
